Departments – Mechanical Fitting Shop

About

The Fitting Shop’s main purpose is to assemble and wire parts supplied by other areas of the business and external suppliers. We work to mechanical and electrical drawings designed by our Technical department and ensure everything is tested and fit for purpose to meet the customer’s demands.

Entry qualifications

The Fitting Shop is made up of skilled fitters and electricians who have completed a recognised Apprenticeship and we’ve recently taken on experienced fitters.

Meet The Team

Gary Emery

Section Leader

Gary is in his twentieth year at Baker Perkins having joined us in 2002 to start his apprenticeship after leaving school age 16. He completed an apprenticeship in Mechanical fitting, then did an Improver year before completing a year’s Electrical NVQ to gain further knowledge. He has also trained to use the forklift, overhead crane, MEWP, PASMA and an IOSH, all provided by Baker Perkins. He worked his way up to Team Leader by 2017 and finally to Section Leader 5 years later.

Dave Taylor

Mechanical Fitter

David joined Baker Perkins at the age of 16 and completed a 4-year apprenticeship. He has worked in many sections within the business over a 45-year period including Planning, Inspection and Parts procurement. He has enjoyed working in a team environment within the Fitting shop where he is a First Aider and Mental Health First Aider.

Joe Fane

Mechanical Fitter

Joe has been at Baker Perkins for four years and has completed his NVQ Level 3 qualification in Mechanical fitting and is currently in his Improver year.

During his time at Baker Perkins, he’s developed his fitting skills and knowledge of bakery and biscuit machinery and will further gain experience in these sectors. When he’s completed his Improver year he will look to become multi-skilled and do an NVQ in Electrical which will allow him to further develop his engineering skills.

Zander Parkin

Mechanical Fitter

Zander has been at Baker Perkins for five years after previously being trained as a heavy plant field engineer for CAT/Finning. He came to us on an Improver year as he didn’t have a fully recognised apprenticeship in Fitting, which he completed within six months.

During his time at Baker Perkins he’s vastly expanded his knowledge of factory fitting to a skilled fitter’s standard, working on food depositors and food/industrial machines. He has also been able to do his MEWP training, plus become a First Aider and mental health first aider.

Gavin Fayers

Mechanical fitter

Gavin started his engineering career at Hobart, completing a three year apprenticeship and gaining a Level 3 NVQ qualification in Electrical and electronic engineering. He then worked as a Mobile service engineer for three years for the same company, working on customer’s sites before moving to Baker Perkins. He completed an Improver year to move his engineering bias towards mechanical rather than electrical and has now been with us for three years working mostly in the bakery and biscuit sector.

A Typical Day

A typical day for us is all about completing builds according to the schedule for any given job. The Section Leaders task team members with a new job which they must check off, collect drawings and any other related parts for and complete before leaving the area tidy for the next job.

At any point during a build we might also push the quote – if in doubt ask! – and will always work in a safe manner, not putting ourselves or others in danger.

We also have Apprentices in the area and Section Leaders can ask any member of the team to help mentor and guide them on their daily tasks.

Who We Work With

The Fitting Shop works closely with the Electrical department so we can ensure we do not hinder the work they carry out and help fit parts they require onto the jobs. We also work closely with the Drawing office to resolve any issues which may arise through the drawings themselves or parts not fitting as they should, that need rectifying to prevent it happening again.
